The Scala Cinema

Bangkok’s tribute to retro cinema

The Scala Cinema offers viewers an eclectic cinematic experience right out of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, with cheap popcorn and seating as well as an intriguing array of independent foreign and international films. Make the most of the Scala as well as other intriguing landmarks on the city’s skyline when you choose to stay at a vibrant Bangkok resort situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya, such as the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa. Expertly offering you a sumptuous luxury getaway, this is one of the finest 5 star hotels in Bangkok that promise and deliver an unforgettable hospitality experience. For cinema fans nostalgic for the classical American and European theatre experience, a night out at the Scala Cinema will provide you with an experience to remember and treasure during your time in Bangkok. From the moment you see the theatre’s façade, you’ll be transported to another time and place, as you’ll see the night’s feature advertised in bright red lettering on the front that have been painstakingly put up by hand.

When you walk in, be prepared for the elegance of early twentieth century art deco, as a huge domed ceiling is peppered with charming bronze art deco flowers. Next you’ll ascend via either of two winding stair cases up to the second floor and pass an immense white chandelier that hangs from the unique ceiling. The pillars flanking the stairs stretch to the ground floor, lending the theatre the sense of immense grandeur only found in one of the majestic cathedrals in Rome. The art deco theme is continued on the second floor with the concessions stand and the ticket booth. Be prepared for an eclectic ticketing experience, as the ticket master will assign you a seat number and write it down on a piece of paper which he will then tear and give you. Hand it to the usher (stylishly decked out in a yellow jacket and bow tie with a welcoming Thai smile) on your way into the theatre, and you’ll be greeted with a sight of about 1,000 plush red velvet seats organised in a wrap-around fashion around the screen for optimal viewing. Then sit back and enjoy the show!
