The Necessary Stage is a non-profit theatre company with charity status in Singapore. Formed in 1987 by current Artistic Director Alvin Tan, The Necessary Stage has a mission to create challenging, indigenous and innovative theatre that touches the heart and mind. The Necessary Stage continuously pushes the artistic boundaries among Singapore’s arts community. It is also the organizer and curator of the annual M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, which showcases contemporary, young and edgy works from around the world. The company has performed in countries such as Berlin, Birmingham, Busan, Cairo, Dublin, Glasgow, Hong Kong, Khabarovsk, Kuala Lumpur, London, Macau, Melbourne, New Delhi, Rijeka, Seoul, Sibiu, Sziget, Taipei and Tokyo.
