Hong Kong, which in Cantonese means ‘fragrant harbour’, is a special administrative region of China and is governed by a separate political system. Bounded by the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta, the city is one of the world’s most densely populated regions. It is a global business hub and is renowned for its shopping opportunities. The city also has a thriving nightlife scene and despite its highly urban nature has plenty of forested country as well for nature-lovers to explore. The best time to visit is between October and December. Not only is the weather less humid during this time, but it also allows tourists to take part in the National Day festivities.
After the First Opium War (which lasted between 1839 and 1842) the British gained and held control of Hong Kong until the Japanese took over during the Pacific War (1941 to 1945). At the end of the war the British resumed control. China assumed sovereignty only in 1997 and since then the city has been celebrating the Chinese National Day every year with tremendous pride; the People’s Republic of China was formed on the 1st of October, 1949 and the day is marked with celebrations throughout the Chinese mainland and extends to Macau and Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong celebrations include music, dancing and fireworks. The massive fireworks display takes place at Victoria Harbour and it can be difficult to find a good spot unless one gets there early. One can get amazing views of the fireworks display from Wan Chai, Central District and Causeway Bay. The display usually lasts about twenty minutes and should not be missed.
The city’s unique blend of eastern and western cultures makes it the ideal starting point for those who want to venture deeper into China. While visiting here tourists can stay at a Hong Kong hotel like Cosmopolitan Hotel Hong Kong. The Wan Chai hotel Hong Kong is a short stroll away from the massive Times Square shopping mall and the Causeway Bay MTR Station. It offers the perfect base from which to enjoy the sights and sounds of this cosmopolitan city and lets you soak up some colourful local culture as well.
