Arts and Culture of Sri Lanka

Historical Arts and Culture of Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan culture is unique and versatile and one that has seen a progression of influences based on a variety of influences of various countries. One of the most primary influences has been from India and with it the advent of Buddhism. As the majority religion in the country, Buddhism has influenced not only the architecture of the nation but also its dance, music and crafts. For this reason visitors to the island will see the sacred bo tree leaf depiction in many different spheres.

The uniqueness of Sri Lankan culture is further enhanced by the strong set of different cultural norms in different parts of the island. The Central province also known as the Kandyan province has long had a rich and vibrant culture with its own unique dance styles, paintings, sculptures and even food. The Southern part of the island meanwhile has a completely different cultural background and the North and East yet another aspect.

These cultural identities enhanced and developed through the various influences of different religions and ethnicities that have over the years called Sri Lanka their home. It has shaped the islanders into a talented, spirited and friendly nation as a whole.

Visitors to the island will be able to experience the wonder of Sri Lankan culture and its arts through several pageants and events held throughout the year such as the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, Vesak celebrations, the Navam and Esala Peraheras, Hindu festivals and much more.

A visit to historical places of interest will undoubtedly offer up a more in depth look at where Sri Lanka was and how it has come to be where it is today. The Sri Lanka arts community can be found in various forms all across the country. Sri Lankan artists take pride in depicting history and spiritual roots in all their work. More often than not Sri Lanka artists have learnt their livelihood and honed their talents through the guidance and training of their elders, thereby keeping the specialty of each art within the family. Visit this island nation and discover the true beauty of a tropical paradise full of a vibrant culture that is unique.
