Arts & Crafts of Maldives

Made up of nearly 1,200 islands which offer some of the best beaches in the world, the Maldives is one of the most popular holiday destinations of the world. It also boasts of a long history and rich and mixed culture which is seen in abundance through its South Asian architecture, and arts and crafts. These skills have been handed down through the generations, producing some of the best craftsmen in the world.

With approximately 900,000 visitors arriving in the Maldives annually, today the field of arts and crafts that showcases the best elements of Maldivian creativity has become a cottage industry and in most cases the livelihood of many a Maldivian family. Catering to the tourist boom in the Maldives, the local bazaar is lined with rows of quaint souvenir shops which are packed with colourful handicrafts in various shapes, sizes and prices.

Wooden lacquer ware takes pride among the Arts and Crafts of the Maldives. Local woods hollowed out and carved into an assortment of ornaments including functional objects such as bowls and boxes are much sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts from around the world. Wooden Dhonis which are the traditional Maldivian boats showcase the expertise of local craftsmen, although these are not tourist attractions but necessities for the Maldivian lifestyle. However, replica Dhonis are available for souvenir hunters and are available in intricately carved wood, coral, or mother-of-pearl. Available in a range of sizes, they even include miniature sails and oars.

As with islanders the world over, weaving is another popular and skilled craft among Maldivians and Thundukunaa mats which are on frequent display is a fine example of this expertise. Locally found reeds are used to weave these mats using a loom of bamboo wood which then go through a process of drying and dyeing to produce beautiful and colourful mats.

Accommodation in Maldives is available in varying prices and style, from small private villas to world class resorts, to suit every type of traveler. The Anantara Dhigu Maldives is one example of a luxury Maldives Resort that offers luxurious and spacious villas complete with all modern facilities to ensure a memorable holiday. Belonging to the world-known Anantara group, the hotel pampers guests with its delectable cuisine and legendary spa treatments.
