Bodu Beru Music: Mesmerising Maldivian Melodies

Despite the barriers of ethnicity, culture and race, mankind has one thing in common: a wholehearted passion for music. This has lead to the creation of different lyrical melodies created by different parts of the world and adopted as their own. For instance, hip hop and rock music is as inherent to the west as oriental music is inherent to the east. Yet, despite its origin, music has a curious ability to unite regardless of class, caste or creed and bring people together in the communal celebration of humanity.

Just like baila music is a common musical occurrence at almost all Sri Lankan celebrations, bodu beru music is enthusiastically played in Maldives. Just like the musical traditions of baila can be traced back to Portuguese colonisation, the roots of bodu beru music are believed to be found in the African continent. Yet, despite its ancient traditions, these lyrical melodies are encompassed in the identity of Maldivians. Appearing in these islands as early as the 11th century, bodu beru music is presently considered the ‘Music of the common people’ in the state.

The music is usually performed by a lead singer accompanied by drummers utilising instruments composed of bamboo and hollowed out coconuts and begins haltingly and low but rapidly works itself into an infectious crescendo ensuring the participation of almost everyone in the vicinity. Greatly enjoyed not only by the locals but also by visiting tourists, this music is bound to get you up on your feet and dancing within a matter of minutes. Composed of an odd juxtaposition of lyrics borrowed from Africa as well as the native language, often, bodu beru music does not make much sense but this does not impede its ability to provide enjoyment to bystanders.

In modern day Maldives this folk music is still quite popular and is showcased in a number of local festivals and is popular among tourists. If you’re lucky you maybe able to experience its infectious melodies from the comfort of your own Maldives resort.
