Fort Canning Hill has a history that spans over 700 years. The small hill which is nearly 60 metres in height is located in the Central Area, within Singapore’s central business district. Once known as Bukit Larangan or Forbidden Hill, the park at Fort Canning has become a popular hangout spot for both locals and tourists, providing visitors with an educational and cultural experience. Visitors can carry out recreational activities such as walking and bird watching. There are plenty of other things to do at the park as well. One can visit the Spice Garden, a replica of the first botanical gardens established in the country or take in the ruined abode of the last king of Singapore. Another popular spot within the park is Fort Canning Green.
A Christian Cemetery until 1865, Fort Canning Green has become a popular venue for live music shows and concerts. With a capacity for about 10,000 people, the shows held here are usually fully packed and the atmosphere is electric. The tombstones that once lined the cemetery have been removed and embedded into the walls that surround Fort Canning Green. The only thing that has been left unchanged is the gateway, an imposing Gothic feature.
