Underwater World Weligama
Best Underwater World Weligama

Weligama is a popular destination in Sri Lanka’s beautiful southern coastline. Needless to say, Weligama, with its stunning beaches and ample beach amenities, is a great place to explore an array of exciting water sports. The town is particularly popular for diving and is home to a few amazing dive sites. If you are staying at Mosvold Villas, one of the most popular boutique hotels in Galle, you can easily reach Weligama in less than 30 minutes. The coastal town is just 5 kilometers from Mirissa and a 2 hour drive on the Southern Highway from Colombo.
Weligama has several excellent diving spots. The pinnacles around these sites feature a wide variety of Nudibranchs as well as an interesting array of sea creatures such as electric rays, manta rays, whale sharks, blue whales, moray eels and sea creatures among many others. Dispa Rock, located just a 30 minute boat ride away, is a great spot to catch a glimpse of whale sharks, manta rays and even blue whales. The site is actually an underwater pinnacle with a sandy bottom around it. Another dive site, located just 20 minutes on boat, is Yala Rock. This is considered to be the most impressive dive site in Weligama. Featuring amazing rock formations that rise up to 20 metres, Yala Rock features caves, swim throughs and plenty of interesting marine life including lobsters, turtles, stonefish and lionfish. Another great dive site with caves and swim throughs is Bridge Rock. If you are a beginner, diving instructors recommend you start out at Mirissa Point. Featuring a sandy bottom and depths between 6 meters – 12 meters, Mirissa Point is easy to explore and features beautiful marine life including bufferfish, groupers, parrot fish and angel fish.
Located in a large natural bay and protected by a shallow coral reef, the town of Weligama is the perfect beach destination. With plenty of services providers for diving, snorkeling, surfing as well as whale and dolphin watching, the town presents travellers with an incredible opportunity to enjoy the ocean to the fullest.
