Dubai International Film Festival

Bringing the Magic of Cinema to The UAE

The many film festivals that are held around the world give film lovers a chance to enjoy a wide range of films and the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) is no exception. Begun in 2004, this popular film festival offers visitors a chance to not only watch international cinematic creations, but films from the region as well, thereby giving Arabic filmmakers an ideal opportunity to showcase their work and gain recognition. Cinephiles in search of Dubai luxury hotels from which to head to venues used for festival screenings can consider Desert Palm Dubai an ideal base for your stay.

The DIFF takes place under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and continues to offer an eclectic viewing experience featuring films from countries such as France, the UK, USA, Australia, Spain and Germany. Among notable winners of the 2013 edition were ‘Ilo Ilo’ from Singapore which won for best film, Ming-liang Tsai for best director for the Taiwanese film Stray Dogs, Irrfan Khan for best actor (The Lunchbox) and Yann Yann Yeo for best actress (Ilo Ilo). A highlight of the festival is the Muhr competition; introduced in 2006, this competition looks to bring to the forefront and reward films from the region and thereby encourage up and coming and aspiring filmmakers. Among the films from the United Arab Emirates planned to be showcased at the 2014 Dubai International Film Festival are Central Market, The Council, Letter To The King, Roshmia and The Confession. Another integral component of the Dubai International Film Festival is the Dubai Film Market (DFM) which gives moviemakers, producers and distributors a chance to sell, buy and develop cinematic works.
