Elephant Activities in Thailand

Gentle Giants of Thailand

Tourism is one of the main industries in Thailand and those who arrive in Thailand come for varying purposes. The range of tourist activities and attractions available in Thailand range from beaches to wildlife and since recent times- elephants! This ecotourism’s popularity has increased the demand for elephant camps in Thailand. One of the most popular areas to see and interact with elephants in Thailand is Chiang Rai. There are various camping activities organised throughout this region. However, if you prefer to enjoy luxury while experiencing Thai elephants then a great recommendation is Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort.

The Asian elephants are considered as an endangered species and there are around 25000-30000 currently in living. These gentle giants are smaller than the African Elephants. Popular places for elephant activities are Thai Elephant Conservation centers. Most activities are exciting and education for all age groups.

If you plan a day trip to the conservation center, then there is the forty minute show which is often the favourite for many visitors. The show features traditional logging techniques and also elephants drawing and painting as well as showing some of their agility skills. There are also elephant rides offered as well as the premises also has an elephant dung paper factory which remains open during the operating hours of the center. Many elephants used in the tourism industry are often used to transport tourists around and some even take them on treks into the jungles.

However, the subject of elephants in tourism has been scrutinised heavily due to the captive nature of these gentle giants. Most of the elephants are held captive and tamed in very unpleasant manners to serve the tourists. These captive elephants are not protected by the Wildlife Protection Act that protects the wild elephants of Thailand as they are domesticated.

As tourists, we are entrusted with the responsibility of not encouraging any behaviour that would hinder the natural lifestyle of these gentle giants.
