Permanent Collections
Described as France’s “largest cultural project abroad”, the museum is host to a vast collection of pieces from the ancient world and contemporary spaces. Embark on a journey through some of the world’s greatest empires, with Hispano-Moorish ceramics, authentic Medieval illustrations, and bronze figurines dating back to 400 BCE.
Special Exhibitions
In addition to the permanent collection, the museum consistently pushes dialogue within the art realm, with unique, seasonal exhibitions that explore eras, institutions and people that redefined what it means to make “art”.
Currently, installations from the 2024 edition of “Art Here”, an annual spotlight on regional artists, are on display at the museum, featuring multi-media artwork designed for outdoor spaces, exploring the theme of “awakening”. The museum is also currently displaying masterpieces by some of the most important figures of art history, at “Post-Impressionism: Beyond Appearance”. Admire the untamed brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles, and discover the very best from these 19th century maestros.
The Architecture
It isn’t just the art. The building itself is a masterclass in architecture, capturing the essence of Abu Dhabi’s landscape and innovations. Designed by Jeane Nouvel, the cubic structure incorporates its surroundings of sand and sea, with sunlight streaming through the open lattice dome roof, and waterways weaving through the building.
