The ancient rock fortress known as Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most grand historical marvels, standing at more than 600 feet. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is certainly a must-visit, so if you’re planning to hike up the giant fortress, here’s what you need to know.

What to Expect

As it was the former palace of Sri Lankan King Kashyapa I, the fortress features several highlights, including religious cave paintings, the famous mirror wall, and the large palace complex at the top. The palace complex is the highlight with its giant lion entrance and remnants of parks, pools, and dining halls.

Best Time to Visit

December to March is the best time to visit, as the weather is relatively cool yet sunny, making it ideal for a hike. The site is open daily from 5 am to 5 pm, but it is better to visit as early as possible, especially if you’re staying in any of the hotels near Sigiriya.

Climbing the Fortress

You’ll need to climb around 1200 steps to reach the top of the rock, which is a decent challenge. It should take around one to one and a half hours, but you can take a slower pace or take time to stop and admire the points of interest along the way.

What to Bring

Essentials to bring include sunglasses, a hat, good walking shoes, and breathable clothing. You can also bring a few snacks, but make sure you don’t litter. If you are visiting as part of a tour from hotels like Water Garden Sigiriya, you’ll be instructed on what you need to bring.
