This intriguing Indonesian island boasts a unique and distinctive culture that always captures the imagination of the visitor. One of the most acclaimed aspects of the Balinese culture is the captivating paintings created by local artists. Experts classify Balinese art as having its origins in Hindu-Javanese cultural elements. It is believed that the art of Bali developed from the artworks produced by skilled artisans of the Majapahit realm. From the 16th to the 20th century, the village known as Kamasan in East Bali was the focal point for traditional Balinese painting and other art. Balinese art has been described as an informal yet sophisticated folk art that combines classicism with liveliness.

Traditionally Balinese paintings focused on themes and scenes from Hindu-Javanese classics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana as well as indigenous narratives. These paintings were typically confined to two dimensional images rendered on bark paper or cloth. Since the natural dyes could only be produced in a limited number of colours, these were the only colours that appeared on Balinese paintings. Additionally it may be seen that certain conventions, for example in the representation of figures and detail, were invariably followed.

In more recent times Balinese painting traditions have demonstrated some signs of development and evolution. Artists began to paint on paper and canvas, with new techniques creating an impression of texture and perspective. Artists in the various regions of Bali began to focus on different aspects of painting creating regional specialization. Today Balinese art is highly regarded amongst connoisseurs and prized around the world. Numerous museums across the globe feature collections of Balinese art.
