Kendra Gallery

Regarded as one of the true highlights for art lovers on a tour of Seminyak, Kendra Gallery is no run-of-the-mill art space in the holiday heartland Bali. Offering art connoisseurs a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak’s downtown area this engaging cultural attraction is a must-visit point of interest for those who wish to discover Indonesia’s contemporary art scene as well as international artists making their mark in Indonesia. Ideally located a mere 10 minutes from Jalan Laksmana and a short ride from Jalan Petitenget, Kendra Gallery can be found in the tranquil region of Jalan Drupadi.

Having opened its doors to the public back in 2008, the venue was set up to introduce western audiences to contemporary Indonesian art and opened a cross cultural dialogue by showcasing  local and international art in one engaging and evolving space. Founded by enthusiast Bruno Wauters, the gallery also serves as a work area and gathering space for villa guests residing in the nearby Uma Sapna Villas which is also owned by Wauters. Featuring exhibitions by seasoned Indonesian artists as well as aspiring, fresh new voices in Indonesian contemporary art, the gallery has become a meeting point for generations of artists where support and feedback forges stronger bonds across eras. Tourists are welcome to explore the confines of the gallery and also interact with the artists behind the creations as well as share opinions with fellow art lovers exploring the gallery.

Surrounded by a scenic and well-maintained garden and lawn, the Kendra Gallery’s picturesque courtyard is often used as a reception area for evening exhibitions as its pond of lilies and verdant landscapes serve as the perfect backdrop for gatherings. The appearance of the courtyard alternates with each exhibition and reflects the theme of the on-going exhibitions. Instalments from exhibitions are at times places in the centre of the lawn while lighting, colour tones and other elements are used to correspond with the theme of the exhibition indoors.
