National Art Gallery in Maldives- A gathering of Maldivian art, literature and history.

The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean; only a stone’s throw from its larger island-neighbour, Sri Lanka. The cluster of islands, known as the Maldives, is made up of twenty six natural atolls consisting of dual island chains. The capital city is Male and located on the South Male Atoll is Naladhu Maldives, a property that embodies the definition of paradise. The islands are known for their pristine beaches, clear blue lagoons, endless coral reefs and luxurious five star hotels. Maldives is also credited with contributing the word ‘atoll’ to the English language; it was derived from the Maldivian word ‘atholhu’.

Male is most populous city in the country, it is also home to an impressive fish market, the Majeedhee Magu which houses several restaurants and shops and Sultan Park, the location in which the Royal Palace once stood. It is an urban park that once held a wide selection of tropical plants, trees and a number of lily ponds spread across its beautifully landscaped lawns. The National Museum also stands within the confines of the park and is housed in the only remaining building of the Royal Palace.

The National Art Gallery opened its doors in 1999. It was established by the Maldivian Government to source and collect art. Regular displays of Maldivian art can be seen in the exhibition space though there is no permanent collection on display yet. The biennial Maldives Contemporary Exhibition is also held at this location to promote local artists. A collection of Royal artefacts is also on display at the museum. Several thrones, ceremonial parasols, sedan chairs and intricately lacquered boxes are exhibited. Statues and figurines that have been collected from around the Maldivian islands can also be viewed. The Museum Building also houses the National Library.
