Thaara Folk Music

A well-loved form of folk music performed in the Maldives, Thaara Folk Music is said to have been introduced by Gulf Arabs who graced this beautiful archipelago during the 17th century.  Choose one of the most well placed Maldives water villas to stay in while soaking up the culture and traditions native to this part of the world and Adaaran Prestige Water Villas is known to offer delightful villas in Maldives which would be ideal for the purpose. Approximately 22 performers take part in this performance, seated in two parallel rows facing one another. However, only men are allowed to participate in this unique display which involves both singing and dancing. Attired in white sarongs and shirts with a green scarf wrapped around the necks, the men start the performance at a slow tempo which gradually increases to reach a crescendo. Traditionally, Thaara folk music had been performed during the fulfilment of the vows and the instruments used here had been extremely primitive where coconut shells and rustic shakers had been used to provide the music. Also the original songs that accompanied the performance had been in the Arabic language which has now been converted into the Maldivian local language, Divehi.
