There are many popular cultural landmarks in Singapore, but one which is linked the artistic and theatrical development of Singapore is the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall. Located on Empress Street in the civic district of Singapore, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall dates back to 1862, during which time the building was the Town Hall with an adjacent theatre. However, to commemorate the life of Queen Victoria, the Victoria Theatre was built beside the Town Hall in 1901. Subsequently, the Town Hall and the Victoria Theatre were incorporated together, to create the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall. The two buildings were connected with the construction of a large clock tower which boasts Palladian architectural style. Thus, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall is actually a town hall turned into an elaborate theatre.
Since 1901, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall hosted numerous concerts and performances. The theatre and the hall were used as a hospital during the war, following which its interior deteriorated. It was however, refurbished and renovated in 1954 and again resumed its role as being a hub of theatre and art. In 1979 the theatre was renovated again to accommodate the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and was thereafter the home of the Orchestra. It was not until 2010 that the theatre and hall got its biggest renovation, where the entire interior was changed so as to create a glamorous and world-class theatre and hall, capable of hosting grand performances.
Naturally, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall is a national monument of Singapore, and is therefore well worth a visit.
