The ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, more commonly known as Sri Lanka, is a popular island destination in the mighty Indian Ocean. Today, with the convenience of online travel agents, like findmyfare, going on vacation is even simpler. Sri Lanka is well known for its fine tropical beaches, the most popular being Hikkaduwa. ‘Hikka Fest’ takes place around July or August of every year. It is a beach party that goes on for five days and five nights with music, dancing and other activities. It has become one of the top things to do in Hikkaduwa.
Snorkelling is another popular activity as Hikkaduwa is home to several stunning coral reefs. The shallow waters just off the shore are ideal for swimming, paddling and exploring the reefs. The best time to head to Hikkaduwa Beach is between November and April when the sea is at its calmest and the colourful fish and corals can be seen clearly. Scuba diving is also available to those who want to discover the deeper Ocean; Kiralagala, Godagala and Black coral point are three of the best dive sites nearby.
Hikkaduwa Beach also has a number of Tiki-style bars and family run eateries that line the beachfront. Cold beer with a fried snack is a much loved combination. Ride into Hikkaduwa town to see Seenigama Temple; the pretty little structure that is perched on its own little island can be seen from the main road. The southern coast of Sri Lanka was badly hit by the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004.
The Tsunami Photo Museum, which is located in neighbouring Telwatta, is housed in two simple small buildings. There are collections of photos, newspaper reports and personal accounts that are very moving and heartbreaking. An eighteen metre tall Buddha statue can be seen in the town of Peraliya, it was built as a Tsunami Memorial.
